At the end of the 1980's during the Afghan war, the Soviet Union started adapting PU scopes, the PU-1 using the best PU scopes remaining in their armories from WWII. These were serviced and adapted to be used on RPK (Kalashnikov's machine gun) 7.62 mm machine guns. The re-fit included a special heavy-duty steel mount that fits on a standard AK rail.
